When asked for one word to describe a Houston summer, most people would go with “hot.” Well, we say “cool.” Not because we consider 90 degrees to be sweater weather, but rather, summer in Houston is cool because of the many summer amenities near Hockley. Here is how you can beat the heat in Texas when you live in The Grand Prairie:
4 Attractions for How to Beat the Heat in Texas
1. Big Rivers Waterpark & Adventures
This New Caney waterpark has something for everyone. Just a short 40-minute drive from The Grand Prairie, it’s a fun and refreshing way to beat the heat in Texas. You can float your cares away on the largest lazy river in the Houston area, zip down waterslides like the Freefall Plus and COLORado River Racer, ride the waves in the wave pool, and play at Gator Splash, which has more than 300+ water features. Test your balance at the floating obstacle course—there are even pint-sized attractions for little swimmers.
2. Typhoon Texas Waterpark
Another popular answer when asked how to beat the heat in Texas is Typhoon Texas Waterpark. A short drive to Katy from The Grand Prairie, this waterpark features plenty of thrills to keep you chill, including Duelin’ Daltons, which includes a seven-story free-fall slide. Enjoy more slides and a new slide-boarding experience at the Snake Pit and a boomerang wall slide at the Texas Twister. After crushing it on the slides, relax on the 1,000-foot-long Lazy T River or kick back at the 375,000-gallon wave pool. The littles (and their parents) will enjoy Typhoon Jr. with attractions sized just for them.
3. Zube Spray Park
In listing summer amenities near Hockley, we must include Zube Spray Park, located only about 10 minutes from The Grand Prairie. Part of the 225-acre Zube Park, the splash pad is a favorite for the young and young-at-heart with a variety of spray features and fountains. Although it is currently closed for maintenance, there is still plenty to enjoy at the park, including fishing, a playground, disc golf, and more. Watch social media for updates on when the popular spray park will reopen.

Step back to the late 19th century with a visit to the Cypress Top Historic Park Museum, just 15 minutes from The Grand Prairie. Representing what was once the heartbeat of Cypress, the historic park includes a general store, the Juergen Dance Hall, a barn, a tool shed, a barber shop, and more. Many antique items are on display, and Cypress Historical Society docents conduct public tours at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays.
