Gardening 101
Preparing Your Plant Beds
Before you begin planting, it is important to properly prepare the soil to provide the best environment possible for plants to thrive.
- Weed your beds and clean out accumulated leaves and debris to ensure access to moisture and sunlight.
- If your soil is compact and dense, try turning it with a shovel. To improve the soil profile even more, you can add compost or fertilizer to introduce a dose of extra nutrients back into the soil.
- Lastly, once your beds are weeded, turned, and free of leaves, top the soil with fresh mulch to help suppress future weeds and lock in moisture.
Plantings That Thrive in The Grand Prairie
Now that your soil is prepped and ready, it’s time to choose plants that are best for our climate.
- Native plants usually require less water, fertilizer and overall maintenance. Plants native to South Texas include the purple coneflower, the black-eyed Susan, inland sea oats, the wax myrtle, knockout roses, jasmine, and more.
- Flowering annuals and perennials that can take the heat but also do well in shade include azaleas, hydrangeas, camellias, begonias and impatiens.
- Fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, okra, basil, zucchini and squash are resilient and can flourish as the temperature rises.
